Sadio Mane’s decisive penalty strike helped the Lions of Terenga claim their first Africa Cup of Nations title. The Liverpool attacker converted the last penalty to give Senegal the win after missing one earlier in the game. Senegal had previously lost both of their previous final appearances.
After no side scored during regular time or extra time, the game went to penalties, which Egypt’s Abdelmonem and Ashin both missed their penalty kicks.
Although Mane will grab the headlines for scoring the decisive penalty, the Senegal squad owes a debt of gratitude to Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy for stopping a dangerous Ashin shot to keep the Teranga Lions in the game.
