During a press conference held at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation in Nairobi, the Azimio coalition, known for their opposition to police brutality, expressed their outrage over the treatment of their supporters during recent demonstrations. It was amidst this fiery atmosphere that the coalition revealed the arrest of Oparanya, alongside a fellow member of Parliament for Mavoko, Patrick Makau.
Confirming the arrest, the police disclosed that Oparanya was apprehended in Kakamega but was en route to Kisumu. The timing of the arrest, only hours after Oparanya led protests in Busia County alongside the controversial lawyer George Wajackoya, adds intrigue to the unfolding story. The duo was rallying people to support the ‘Tumechoka’ initiative, a campaign launched by Azimio party leader Raila Odinga, aimed at removing President William Ruto from office.

Just a day before the arrest, Interior CS Kithure Kindiki issued a stern warning, vowing to punish the masterminds and financiers behind the disruptive protests. Kindiki assigned blame to the organizers, accusing them of orchestrating violence, looting, and widespread destruction of both public and private property during the demonstrations.
In a scathing statement, Kindiki expressed his frustration, remarking how the protestors had initially promised a peaceful political rally at the Kamukunji grounds. However, they instead unleashed chaos upon innocent Kenyans, resulting in loss of life, severe injuries to both law enforcement officers and civilians, and a devastating blow to the country’s economy.
