Deputy President of Kenya, Rigathi Gachagua, has issued a stern warning to National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs) regarding their failure to address drug and illicit alcohol abuse in their administrative areas. Speaking at a homecoming and thanksgiving service for Principal Secretary Ephantus Kimotho of the State Department for Forestry in Ngong, Kajiado County, the DP announced that 50% of administrators might face dismissal if they do not deal with this issue.

“We are willing to sack 50% of you if you don’t deal with this. We will not do any transfers. If an Officer Commanding Station (OCS) or commissioner cannot deal with the issue of drugs, we will also relieve him of his duties,” the DP cautioned.

The Deputy President revealed that President William Ruto fully supports the decision to dismiss NGAOs and emphasized that they cannot sit back and watch as a whole generation is wiped out. “Within 14 days, we will take action,” he disclosed, emphasizing Ruto’s position on the matter.

Concerning the 14-day ultimatum, the DP stated, “Drugs and chiefs cannot coexist in the same location. By Sunday, May 14, 2023, you must report to my office that you have cleared drugs and illegal alcohol.” To help administrators avoid termination following the two-week deadline, the DP offered a strategy: Assistant chiefs, chiefs, and OCSs should exchange lists of drug and illicit alcohol dealers.
“The time for action is now. We cannot afford to waste any more time. We must act swiftly and decisively to address this problem,” the Deputy President said.
The Deputy President has been actively working to eliminate illicit alcohol, particularly in the Mt. Kenya region, arguing that it has robbed many young Kenyans of their dreams. On Saturday, April 15, he initiated a campaign against drug and alcohol abuse in Mt. Kenya.
“Those who produce illicit alcohol that destroys future generations are worse than murderers. The force of government will be felt in this region and the rest of the country in the coming days. It is either drug and alcohol abuse or you, the security agents, that will leave this region,” the DP stated during the campaign launch.
The Deputy President’s words have been met with mixed reactions. Some people applaud the government’s efforts to address the issue of drug and alcohol abuse, while others believe that dismissing administrators will not solve the problem.
“It’s about time the government took action against drug and alcohol abuse. We need to protect our young people from the dangers of these substances,” said one resident of Nairobi. Another person argued that dismissal is not the solution, saying, “We need to address the root cause of the problem, not just fire administrators.”
