In a recent statement, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, declared that he will not be deterred in his ambition to capture the Kenyan capital of Nairobi. Kainerugaba, who currently holds the rank of four-star general in the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), but is currently without any official duties, has also dared his father to dismiss him from the military once again, in light of these controversial remarks. Kenyans have expressed fear and concern at the potential implications of these statements.
This isn’t the first time that Muhoozi has made such bold statements on social media. In October of last year, he caused quite a stir with a series of tweets in which he claimed that it would only take him two weeks to capture Nairobi. He even asked for recommendations on where he should live after the mission was complete.
The general also alleged that some Kenyans fear Uganda’s army, claiming that it is far superior to Kenya’s and can capture Nairobi in just one week.
Despite these outrageous claims, Muhoozi is no stranger to controversy. In the wake of last year’s tweets, Kenya’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Alkfred Mutua, met with the Ugandan Ambassador to Kenya who assured him that Muhoozi’s tweets did not reflect the government’s position. President Yoweri Museveni even offered a personal apology for his son’s remarks.
It remains to be seen how the Kenyan government will respond to Muhoozi’s latest threat, but one thing is for sure – tensions between the two countries are on the rise.
