How Sauti sol found themselves in a 10 million shillings Debt

by Chief Okuzo

Music pays, but it ain’t for the faint of heart,” said Bien of Sauti Sol in a recent interview with CTA on YouTube. The acclaimed musician delved into the ups and downs of building a successful music career, revealing that his band Sauti Sol once found themselves in a whopping 10 million shilling debt during their “Lives and Die in Africa” album tour in Mombasa.

But, as Bien puts it, “where there’s a will, there’s a way.” Despite the financial setback, Sauti Sol managed to pay off their debt through multiple shows and hard work.

After the tour in Mombasa, we were in 10 million shillings debt, after a thorough calculation we found that we owed multiple people a total of ten million shillings, but we still managed to pay the debt after multiple shows here and there,” bien said.

And, as fate would have it, their Mombasa tour was a turning point for the band. “After that show, we realized we had truly become a household name in the country. That’s when we decided we couldn’t charge less than a million shillings for a performance,” Bien said.

But, as any musician knows, a successful career comes with a price. Bien explained that as a boy band, they have a team of instrumentalists, producers, and managers that need to be compensated, and it would be unfair to charge less than a million shillings for a show. “When I tell you we charge a million, just know that I have a full band, and everyone needs to be fed. It takes a team to bring that entertainment quality to that level,” Bien concluded.

So, for aspiring musicians out there, take note: music pays, but it ain’t for the faint of heart. But with hard work and determination, you too can make a fortune and live your best life.
