Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has been forced to reply over allegations that he had previously ordered the banning of ‘mikokoteni’ in Nairobi. Taking to his Twitter page, the Nairobi boss confirmed that he hasn’t banned handcarts in the City.
Sakaja urged Nairobians to turn a blind eye on the allegations, adding that he isn’t committed to destroy the business. He stated, “Ignore the fake news. There’s no ban on mkokotenis and handcarts.”
A report had earlier been crafted that the Nairobi Governor had banned handcarts when he hosted a meeting with the County staff earlier on Monday at Nairobi’s City Hall. The Governor was describing the handcarts that transport garbage in the city.
He had earlier stated, “I have ordered new waste skips today… When we get enough litter points in the markets and in the streets, I don’t want to see garbage handcarts in town, because they are the ones who are dumping at night. Handcarts should be reserved for ferrying luggage.”
On Monday, the new Governor ordered the immediate release of all the motorcycles that had been impounded by the County Government. However, Sakaja advised that the process was to be done in an orderly manner so as to provide order in the city.
It shall be recalled that earlier in July, the NMS led by Director Badi had promised to release the impounded motorcycles. What are your thoughts on this story? Kindly share your insights down below.
