George Oduor, a long-serving personal aide to opposition leader Raila Odinga, has died after a short illness. His death was confirmed on Wednesday, April 2nd, sending shockwaves across political circles and prompting tributes from ODM-affiliated leaders and members of the public.
Oduor, known for his extremely private life, had rarely appeared in the media or public domain despite his decades-long service to Raila Odinga. For many Kenyans, his voice and personal life remained a mystery, with little to no presence on social media or in public discourse.
He is currently lying at a city hospital morgue, with the cause of death yet to be publicly disclosed.
Oduor was often seen accompanying Raila Odinga at political events, both locally and internationally. His last known public appearances were in February and early March 2024 — first, during Raila’s trip to Ethiopia for the African Union Commission (AUC) elections and later, during the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Raila and President William Ruto.
Throughout his career, Oduor maintained a low profile, never giving interviews or public statements. Despite having close proximity to one of Kenya’s most prominent political figures, he shunned publicity and led a life of discretion.
Oduor had been part of Raila Odinga’s inner circle through major milestones, including the time Raila was imprisoned during President Moi’s regime, the death of Raila’s father Jaramogi Oginga Odinga — where Oduor was reportedly among those who carried the casket — and Raila’s appointment as Prime Minister in 2008.
His passing has sparked an outpouring of condolences on social media, with Kenyans sharing rare photos of him alongside Raila Odinga. ODM politicians have also paid tribute to his loyalty, discipline, and years of quiet service.
More details, including funeral arrangements and cause of death, are expected to be shared by the family or ODM party officials in the coming days.
