With all political aspirants pushing hard to sell their manifestos and be on the ballot, Former Nairobi governor Mike sonko is between a rock and a hard place as the supreme court ruled him out of the Mombasa Gubernatorial race. Sonko has claimed the ruling is unfair and that the incumbent chief justice, Martha Koome , should not have been part of the judges that made the decision claiming she already had a stand on his political move .
The ex Nairobi governor stated that Koome was heard on media stating that an impeached governor remains impeached until the case is overturned thus claiming the lady chief justice already had a stand concerning his case.
Sonko further added that the CJ was at fault because she is a supreme judge and she was not supposed to be in the court ruling as she already had an opinion on the political aspirants’ case.
,’ Martha Koome is not above the law, I am not against her, I respect her but she should not be the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. I want her to step down in a respectable manner, I am not saying this because I was disadvantaged by the ruling but I have my own reasons,’ Sonko added.
The supreme court ruled in accordance to article 181 of the constitution , section 33 of the county Governments act and standing orders of the Assembly and the Senate. The court ruled stating that they found no fault in the impeachment of the former Nairobi governor claiming the petition lacked merit.
Sonko, further stated that the chief justice,as the judge of the supreme court should have given him seven days or ten days for him to finish up with the Mombasa High court questioning what he claimed as a hurry In delivering his verdict.
Yesterday Interim Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman , Wafula Chebukati, stated that the electoral commission was ready for the August polls. Concerning Sonko’s case Chebukati stated
,’I have not had time to look at the judgment of the Supreme Court and discuss with my team as a commission. We shall look at the issue and maybe get back on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday next week. We have not had time to navigate this issue,”
