Former Nairobi Governor and Wiper Party Mombasa gubernatorial candidate Mike Sonko has trashed the Friday’s Supreme Court ruling that snubbed his impeachment appeal. Sonko argued that Chief Justice Martha Koome, the lead judge among the seven judges who rejected his appeal was compromised.
The Friday judgement by the Supreme Court locked Sonko’s dream of contesting in the August poll. Sonko stated that Martha Koome had previously explained her stand on the case to the media before she issued the ruling.
The renowned businessman argued that because Martha Koome had already given her stand prior to the ruling, she shouldn’t have been among the seven judges since she had shown her impartiality. Sonko stated that he prefers to lose the right way rather than being compromised because of other individuals’ self interests.
Sonko stated, “Heri nishindwe kwa haki lakini si dhulma. Martha Koome was heard on media saying that an impeached governor remains impeached until the case is overturned, a prisoner remains a prisoner until his appeal is upheld and the case is overturned.”
He stated that since the Chief Justice had her opinion on his case, she was supposed to excuse herself from the case. The former Makadara MP stated, “She was at fault because contrary to the law, the fact that she is a Supreme Court judge, she was not supposed to be in my case ruling because she already had an opinion that I am not supposed to be a governor and in the IEBC list.” What’s your view on this story?
