Cracks in Kenya Kwanza? President Ruto and Kindiki’s Political Divorce Looms

by Chief Okuzo

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki’s role in the Kenya Kwanza government is under scrutiny as reports suggest growing tensions between him and President William Ruto. Barely three months into his tenure as Deputy President, signs of a strained relationship have begun to surface, sparking speculation about his political future.

The first indication of trouble came during the New Year’s crossover event in Kisii County. Kindiki, a key figure in the administration, was notably absent from the high-profile gathering attended by the president and his entire cabinet. His no-show, coupled with a lack of official explanation, left many questioning his commitment and raised eyebrows among supporters.

Traditionally, the Deputy President is expected to lead such events in the president’s absence, making Kindiki’s failure to appear even more conspicuous. The incident set social media abuzz, with self-styled online detectives uncovering what they claim are deeper issues within the administration.

Silence and Speculation

Deputy President Kindiki’s reduced public appearances have not gone unnoticed. Once an active and vocal figure, especially during his time as Cabinet Secretary for Interior, Kindiki has recently adopted a much quieter profile. Critics and supporters alike have noted the stark difference, with some attributing it to internal challenges in fulfilling his new role.

“The Deputy President is uncomfortable with the idea of being ordered around by the President’s Personal Assistant,” one Kenyan remarked online. Another wrote, “Kithure Kindiki is missing in action, again! The curse continues!”

Tensions Over Gachagua

The last public appearance that drew significant attention was a TV interview in which Kindiki was asked about Rigathi Gachagua, the former Deputy President who faced impeachment under Ruto’s leadership. Kindiki’s response, referring to Gachagua as “my brother,” appeared to defy expectations from within the administration, where Gachagua is seen as an adversary.

Reports suggest that Kindiki had been instructed to openly criticize Gachagua during the interview but declined, stating he could not speak ill of someone he considers family. This refusal, according to sources, has contributed to the growing rift between Kindiki and Ruto’s camp.

Allegations of a Fallout

Adding to the speculation are allegations of a heated confrontation at State House, during which Kindiki was reportedly slapped by a senior government official. The altercation is said to have stemmed from Kindiki’s protests over the government’s handling of abduction cases, some of which have affected his home community.

Political commentator Aoko shared the dramatic claims on Twitter, writing:
“Have you noticed how suddenly Kindiki is missing? Farouk slapped Prof juzi bana! Kofi ajab hapo State House. Kithure was protesting arrests, especially in his backyard. ‘Nitawatetea aje na mna abduct their kids?’ Bibi ya Kindiki is on blood pressure meds!”

While these claims remain unverified, they have sparked a flurry of debate and concern. Dennis Itumbi, a close ally of the president, was quick to dismiss the allegations, tweeting:
“Ati DP @KindikiKithure was slapped by Farouk. UWONGO. Ati, there is a fallout, PLEASE craft UWONGO, that lasts. The President and his deputy are busy implementing the PLAN. This year the projects and programmes will SPEAK. In 2025, we will point out your LIES in real time.”

A Familiar Pattern?

Observers have drawn parallels between Kindiki’s current situation and the events that led to Gachagua’s impeachment. Gachagua’s political downfall began with similar reports of distancing from public events, followed by rumors of a fallout and eventual impeachment proceedings.

Critics argue that this pattern is now playing out with Kindiki, with mounting tensions and diminished visibility pointing to a potential political exit.

Challenges Ahead

For Kindiki, the challenges extend beyond interpersonal conflicts. Critics suggest that his inability to publicly align with the administration’s stance on key issues, coupled with policy disagreements, may further erode his position.
