President Ruto Statements on Niger Coup Ignite Online Uproar

Kenya's President William Ruto has shifted his focus from Sudan to West Africa's Niger. Following the announcement of a military coup by Abdourahmane Tchiani, Ruto criticized the ousting of democratically elected President Mr. Bazoum, terming it an "unconstitutional change of government." His statement has sparked varied reactions among Kenyans online, with some cautioning against interference in West African affairs.

Kenya’s President William Ruto has once again captured the headlines, this time for directing his attention to the unfolding situation in Niger. After voicing criticism of the clashes in Sudan not long ago, which led to Sudanese military warnings against his meddling, and later, a hacking attack on Kenya’s government websites by Sudanese hackers, Ruto’s focus has now shifted to West Africa.

In a press release, President Ruto condemned Abdourahmane Tchiani for orchestrating a military coup that ousted democratically elected President Mr. Bazoum. The Kenyan leader vehemently denounced the actions as an “unconstitutional change of government,” emphasizing the importance of upholding democratic principles in the region. President Ruto also called for the immediate release of Niger President Mohamed Bazoum, who is believed to be held captive following the coup that took place on Wednesday.

Moreover, President Ruto underscored that the coup in Niger violates the constitutive act of the African Union, an organization that staunchly “condemns and rejects any unconstitutional change of government.” As a responsible member of the African community, Kenya offered its assistance to Niger in resolving any conflicts, should the African Union deem it appropriate.

However, Ruto’s statement regarding the Niger coup has triggered diverse reactions from Kenyans on social media platforms. Some citizens believe that President Ruto should focus on domestic issues first, considering Kenya recently experienced deadly protests and political tensions remain high. The sentiment shared by some is that Kenya’s leader should prioritize resolving the country’s challenges before involving himself in the affairs of other nations.

Online discussions have been replete with comments questioning the appropriateness of President Ruto’s statements on foreign matters. A Twitter user aptly quoted a Metumi Proverb, cautioning against rushing to put out a neighbor’s house fire while one’s own house is ablaze. The message seemingly implies that Kenya should address its internal issues before extending a helping hand to other countries.

Another Twitter user urged President Ruto to refrain from meddling in West African issues, expressing concerns that such actions might jeopardize Kenya’s economy and security. Some even suggested that if President Ruto wishes to condemn Niger’s coup, he should do so from the nearest country to Niger, rather than from Kenya.
