No Finance Bill, No Road Funds : Rigathi Gachagua warns MPs opposing Finance Bill

by Chief Okuzo

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has cautioned the Members of Parliament who stood in opposition to the financial bill, dismissing any hopes of diverting funds to their cherished local projects, including infrastructure and road developments.

Drawing inspiration from a recent encounter at the St Charles Lwanga Secondary School in Kitui County, Gachagua exposed the apparent contradiction in the stance of Kitui Central’s MP, Makali Mulu. The Deputy President marveled at the MP’s fervent denouncement of the bill, only to hear him passionately lobbying for road improvements in the same breath.

“The Finance Bill discourse crackles with palpable tension,” Gachagua declared, “Just yesterday in Kitui, I witnessed the MP rallying for a cessation amid a chorus of applause. But moments later, he found himself passionately advocating for roads. I am left to wonder from which  well he envisions this money to magically spring?”

Gachagua implored the MPs to stand firmly behind the bill if they hoped to secure the development funds they so desperately desired. In a candid and unfiltered address, he firmly proclaimed, “To those leaders peddling false hope to Kenyans, be warned: if your MP opposes the Finance Bill, they should not dare to demand funds for road construction.”

As the Harambee unfolded, Gachagua emerged as an unwavering champion of the Finance Bill of 2023, he dissected the irony of seeking government funding for schools, improved roads, and infrastructure while simultaneously rejecting any tax increases.

Gachagua underscored the necessity for citizens to shoulder their tax obligations, highlighting how tax revenues are the lifeblood of both capital and recurrent expenditure. “Honesty compels me to speak,” he boldly proclaimed. “Our expenditures can only be sustained through tax revenues. We have called for additional teacher recruitment. But who will foot this bill? Certainly not my Ksh1 million salary. It is the citizens who will ultimately bear this responsibility.”

Never one to shy away from stirring the pot, Gachagua took a playful jab at the politicians of the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya coalition, who vehemently oppose the bill. With a touch of audacity, he curtly concluded, “Despite your cacophonous objections, your dramatic performances with sufurias perched on your heads, or your misguided belief that the bill won’t pass—let me deliver a reality check: you simply don’t have the numbers. The sooner you face this truth, the better for all of us.”
