In a stunning revelation, the self-proclaimed godfather of gengetone music, VDJ Jones, shared a heart-wrenching story of how his morality was put to the ultimate test in exchange for wealth. During an exclusive interview with Plug TV Kenya, the DJ opened up about his encounter with a powerful media personality and musician, who also happened to be a member of the LGBTQ community.
“”mimi nishai katiwa na mwanaume, bigfish kwa industry, sitamtaja lakini ni msanii na media personnel. (I was almost molested by a big shot in the industry, a media personality, and a musician,) Jones revealed.
The DJ described how he was lured into a business meeting at the media personality’s house, only to find himself locked inside with the keys in the man’s boxers.” I was called for a business meeting in the evening, not knowing that he had invited me to his house, the moment I arrived at his home, he locked the house and took the keys and placed them inside his boxers, and dared me to remove them if at all I wanted to leave the house ” VDJ Jones added.
The media personality then offered Jones a MacBook and a large sum of money in exchange for sexual favors.” he offered me a MacBook and around 100k he knew that I was a DJ and I needed equipment for my work so he thought I would fall for the MacBook, but you know I am straight I can never sleep with a fellow man” he stated.
Jones, who identifies as straight, bravely refused the advances and threatened the media personality with immediate consequences if he continued. Despite the man’s persistence, Jones eventually forgave him and left the house. The DJ stated that the entire ordeal was the most challenging moment in his life and career.
Kenya has imposed strict penalties on acts of same-sex sexual activity, labeling it as “gross indecency” and “carnal knowledge against the order of nature.” This law, inherited from British colonial rule, carries a maximum sentence of fourteen years behind bars – a sentence that only men can face.
However, while the law may be on the books, its enforcement has been inconsistent. According to reports, police often resort to using other laws, such as those against “loitering,” “solicitation,” and “impersonation,” to target the LGBT community. Despite this, discrimination and violence against the LGBT community continue to be a problem, with high-profile attacks even taking place in refugee camps such as Kakuma.
In recent years, there have been legal battles aimed at challenging the criminalization of same-sex sexual activity and protecting the rights of LGBT individuals and organizations. A victory was won when the use of forced anal exams was declared illegal, and the right for LGBT groups to form and the register was upheld. Despite a rejection by the High Court in 2019, there is an ongoing constitutional challenge against the law.
