Prof George Wajackoya: the modern church has become a conduit of poverty.

by Chief Okuzo

Roots Party leader Professor George Wajackoyah has caused a stir with his recent comments about the modern lifestyle of Christianity. Taking to Twitter, the presidential candidate for the August 2022 election expressed his reservations about the commercialization of the church, stating that it has become a conduit of poverty.

“Let’s liberalize ourselves from the shackles of conservative Christian mentality. It’s time to say NO to mechanical and commercialized preaching. The modern church has become a means of perpetuating poverty,” said Prof Wajackoyah.

The professor’s comments come hot on the heels of a national prayer meeting led by President William Ruto, Fast Lady, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, and other government officials who sought divine intervention for the prolonged drought.

Interestingly, Prof Wajackoyah is a follower of Krishna and has been following the religion since he was a teenager. In a recent interview with Tanzanian journalist Millard Ayo, the Roots Party leader revealed that he is a High Priest in the Hare Krishna faith – making him the highest-ranking African in the religion.

“We have our holy book, the Bhagavad-gita, which we use for our morning prayer. I’m like a black Indian because their school of thought has shaped my ideologies on many issues in the world. That’s why I don’t drink, or eat meat or fish. I’m a pure vegetarian,” Prof Wajackoyah explained.

The professor has been a vocal critic of President Ruto’s leadership and has been attending rallies organized by the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition to reject his leadership. The coalition’s leader, Raila Odinga, has also been vocal about ending Christian chauvinism in Africa.

“We will put an end to Christian chauvinism. Our Constitution states that Kenya is a secular society and is a God-fearing nation that must respect all religions,” said Mr. Odinga.

Meanwhile, during the national prayers at the Nyayo Stadium, President Ruto expressed his delight that the church has come back to the center of politics in Kenya. This comes after he expressed concern during the election campaigns when some church leaders were forced to change their political stand
