President Ruto’s Controversial Photo with COTU Bosses Sparks Outrage Online

by Chief Okuzo

In a recent meeting with workers’ representatives at State House, Nairobi, President William Ruto called on unions to focus on the welfare of all workers, including those in the Diaspora. The President also encouraged unions to collaborate with the government on the Affordable Housing Project, which aims to provide decent homes for millions of ordinary Kenyans.

However, the photos from the meeting have raised concerns among the younger generation, who have pointed out that the union was only represented by elderly men, with no young people in sight. This has prompted reactions from Kenyans, including former Capital FM producer Joe Muchiri.

In a strongly-worded statement, Muchiri criticized the Central Organization of Trade Unions Kenya (COTU), stating that the institution, which is supposed to defend and improve workers’ rights, has become out of touch with the majority of Kenyan workers. “Atwoli has been leading this institution since the 80s and is now probably a billionaire, workers are still badly paid in Kenya,” he said.

Muchiri also called for a change in leadership, stating that the current “geezers” should step aside and allow younger generations to take the helm. “All these geezers need to go wachukue pension they pave way for people born in the 80s and after,” he concluded.

As the debate over workers’ representation and welfare in Kenya continues, many are calling for a more inclusive approach that takes into account the needs and aspirations of all workers, young and old.

In an effort to encourage the unions to work alongside the government, Ruto emphasized the importance of unions in driving policy-making towards equality and inclusive socio-economic development. He called for more collaboration between the unions and the government in the Affordable Housing Project, which aims to provide decent homes to millions of ordinary Kenyans.

Furthermore, Ruto urged the unions to extend their reach to include the welfare of workers in the Diaspora and to work together to actualize Universal Health Coverage that will ensure all Kenyans access to quality and affordable medical care. This way, he said, the country will make significant progress towards creating a brighter future for all its citizens.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who was also present at the meeting, expressed his commitment to working with all for unity and development, emphasizing that elections should not be an issue that divides the country. The future looks bright as the Kenyan government and trade unions work together to create a better future for all.
