An elusive and dangerous criminal, who had been terrorizing the residents of Nairobi’s Eastlands area with a string of robberies, met his demise last night in a fierce shootout with the police at Mathare’s Mlango Kubwa area. Known only as Vinnie among his associates, the thug had fallen into a trap laid by the top crime busters of the DCI Starehe unit.
Vinnie had no chance of escape as he came face to face with battle-hardened detectives who had an excellent track record of dealing with armed miscreants. Earlier, the detectives had laid a trap for Vinnie, who was headed out for his usual nocturnal adventures.
When ordered to stop, he defied the ultimatum and began shooting indiscriminately, trying to escape. However, his shots missed the detectives who had taken cover in a drainage trench, prompting the section commander to return fire with lethal accuracy, scoring a direct hit on the thug’s soul with a volley of blaring gunfire that echoed across the Mathare valley in the dead of the night.
