The Sound City MVP Awards 2023 are finally here, and the anticipation is at an all-time high. For decades, these awards have been recognizing and honoring artists across the African continent, and this year, Kenya’s hip-hop scene is heating up with nominations.

Hip-hop enthusiasts, particularly fans of Kenya’s very own Wakadinali, will be thrilled to know that the group has been nominated for the Best New MVP award. They’ll be going head-to-head with some heavy hitters from Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, and Tanzania. The Kenyan group will be facing off against some tough competition from Victony, Ayra Starr, Young Jonn, Se’yi Vybez, Fave and Ruger from Nigeria, Black Sheriff from Ghana, Costa Titch from South Africa, and Phina from Tanzania.

But Wakadinali isn’t the only Kenyan representation in the awards, as Khaligraph Jones and Bien have also received nods. Bien’s hit song “Mbwe Mbwe” is up for Song of the Year, while Khaligraph’s “Hiroshima” featuring Dax has been nominated for Best Hip Hop Song of the Year. while Kenya’s drill group Buruklyn Boyz has just been nominated for the coveted title of Best Group or Duo at the MVP awards, proving that they’re more than just Wakadinali’s little brother.

Will our Kenyan stars bring the awards back home? Only time will tell. But one thing’s for sure, the Sound City MVP Awards will definitely be one for the books. And speaking of books, let’s not forget the beef that happened between Kenya and Nigeria a couple of years back, when Kenyan rapper Khaligraph Jones won Hip Hop Artist of the Year, only for Nigerian rapper Blaqbonez to dispute the win, sparking a heated back-and-forth between the two countries. But all’s well that ends well, as the two were recently spotted hanging out together, proving that even the fiercest of kinds of beef can be squashed.
