According to data by the health ministry of Kenya, in the last year youth aged between 10-19 have been infected by HIV/AIDS with Atleast 98 new infections weekly. One in every five adolescent women who age between 15-19 are either pregnant or are mother’s already.
Kenya ranks third globally as teenage pregnancies have increased according to data by the National Aids Control Council that has revealed a rising case in HIV infections as well as teenage pregnancies.
“We deliver Atleast 12,000 women every month and out of this, 10% are mothers between 10-19 years. In the last one year, we have seen almost 6,000 teen pregnancies in Nairobi and 50% of them end up being HIV positive ,” Dr Ouma Oluga stated.
The current data shows that Atleast 72% of all new infections come from counties like ; Kisumu, Kisii, Nandi, Laikipia and Tana river . In addition adolescents and adults aged between 15-29 Contribute to Atleast 61% of all new adult HIV infections .
The country is still trying to reduce the number of HIV AIDS as well as teenage pregnancies as it is considered a ticking time bomb before vision 2030.
Health Permanent Secretary Susan Mwachache stated
,” Kenya has the third highest teen pregnancies where one in every five adolescent aged 15-19 are already mother’s or pregnant with their first child.”
