Nakuru county has been on the limelight with the rate of crime increasing in the region from the Mawanga murders to the alleged ‘Nyuki Gang’. Human rights groups have come out stating that the Nakuru Nyuki Gang suspects were executed by police as such calling for the suspension of Nakuru County Police Commissioner Peter Mwanzo.
The group has also added that other extra judicial killings were witnessed in Nairobi where Mwanzo served before being transferred to Nakuru where some youths were shot as the police stated they were suspects of a gang that had been terrorizing residents in the area.
The Independent Medico Legal Unit stated and we quote
,’Family members and the neighbours witnessed as the police officers picked the four from their houses in Kwa Maiko village, Barut, Nakuru West sub-county. From the manner in which they were identified, it is apparent that the officers knew who they were looking for,’
Addressing a press conference Peter Mwanzo on July 15th 2022 stated that the four gunned down were part of a gang that has been terrorizing residents in Nakuru. However reports from the family members of the victims revealed that police murdered the suspects in a rather unfashionable manner. Collins Kibet, Collins Kipkorir, Kevin Kipyegon and Dennis Kipchirchir lost their lives in the eyes of the police officers as witnesses stated.
Autopsy reports reveal that the suspects were shot at close range. This was in the head, abdomen and the chest.
,’’Further examination of the bodies showed that the bodies were dragged on the ground which implies that the place where they were collected was a secondary crime scene. There was no evidence of defensive wounds on the bodies.”
The Independent Medico legal unit stated.
Extra judicial killings have been on the rise with human rights groups championing for justice. Whether Peter Mwanzo and the officers in charge of pulling the trigger will be brought to book remains a test of time.
