Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has finally spoken out about the recent clashes witnessed along the borders of Kisumu and Kericho. The clashes, which occurred during a nationwide protest, have raised concerns about the escalating tensions in the region. In a statement posted on his official Twitter account, Kindiki emphasized the importance of peaceful resolution and adherence to the law. He stated, “All differences, be they social, political, religious, or community, can only be resolved peacefully and within the law. Violence and lawlessness cannot be a solution to any dispute.”
Kindiki strongly condemned the individuals responsible for orchestrating chaos in Sondu Township, disguising their actions as a border dispute between Kericho and Kisumu Counties. He labeled them as criminals whose acts cannot be tolerated or excused. Expressing the government’s commitment to fostering peace and cohesion among communities residing in border towns, he added, “The Government is ready to facilitate peace-building and cohesion efforts between communities living in border towns.”

The Interior Cabinet Secretary also stressed the need to put an end to the culture of impunity prevailing in the country. He called for firm and decisive action against those who are determined to plunge the nation into anarchy through violence and wanton destruction of both public and private property. In a bid to address the escalating tensions, Kindiki held a security briefing with the Rift Valley and Nyanza Regions, as well as the Security and Intelligence Committees of Kericho and Kisumu Counties. Additionally, he addressed a public gathering at Sondu Market, located on the border of the two counties.
According to reports, the clashes allegedly involved armed youths wielding arrows and pangas who infiltrated the Sondu area and targeted demonstrators, who were believed to be from the Luo community. The attack resulted in several people sustaining injuries.
