William Ruto: we will generate electricity using Nairobi garbage wastes

by Chief Okuzo

In the midst of the ongoing battle against skyrocketing electricity bills, President William Ruto has announced plans to combat the issue by exploring alternative energy solutions. Speaking at the launch of an affordable housing project in the Starehe Constituency, Ruto revealed that his government intends to generate electricity from waste.

“This administration is going to sort out garbage in Nairobi, and we will turn all that waste into power and electricity. I am committed to this project and the national government will support the county government of Nairobi to make it happen,” Ruto declared.

The move comes in response to widespread dissatisfaction with the Kenya Power and Lighting Company’s (KPLC) monopoly on the power industry, which has resulted in exorbitant prices and unreliable supply. Former Kiambu governor William Kabogo recently called upon Ruto to open up the industry to competition, arguing that this would attract more players and bring down prices.

In a now-viral tweet, Kabogo urged the President to take action, stating that “many companies will deliver power to the people at less than half the current prices of KPLC.” He then added, with a cheeky dose of sarcasm, “and I know you’re aware.”

However, Ruto’s economic advisor David Ndii threw a spanner in the works by revealing that Kenyans may have to choose between costly power available 24/7 or cheap power available for only a few hours a day. Nevertheless, Ndii emphasized that power cost reduction would attract more private investment into the industry, ultimately leading to lower prices.
