The streets of Nairobi were in a frenzy yesterday as popular comedian Eric Omondi staged a peaceful demonstration outside of the parliament buildings. But the question on everyone’s lips was, who was pulling the strings behind this comedic act? Many Kenyans speculated that the opposition, led by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, may have had a hand in the protest.
The demonstration, which resulted in Omondi’s arrest, sparked a flurry of social media activity as netizens tried to uncover the truth behind the comedian’s antics. Was he a mere puppet in the hands of the opposition, tasked with stirring up trouble ahead of their public prayer rally in Givanjee gardens?
However, Omondi’s younger brother, Fred Omondi, was quick to defend his sibling, denying any links to the opposition and stating that Eric had taken to the streets on behalf of all Kenyans who are struggling to make ends meet in these tough economic times.
“Eric Omondi hajatumwa na mtu yeyote, he is not affiliated with any political parties whether the government or the opposition,” Fred told reporters.
Fred also voiced his support for his brother’s efforts to hold the government accountable for the rising costs of living in Kenya, saying that Eric had taken similar actions in the past, including protesting against high electricity bills.
“you see hii si mara ya kwanza kuona eric omondi ameenda parliament kufanya demonstration, kwanza hapo kwa bill ya stima, I support him fully, hiyo bill ya stima imepanda, na serikali inafaa ishugulikie” Fred Omondi added.
Eric’s peaceful demonstration may have landed him in hot water with the law, as he spent the night in a police cell and faced charges of causing disturbance without proper documentation. But to many Kenyans, the comedian’s actions have sparked a much-needed conversation about the state of the economy and the struggles faced by ordinary citizens
