It’s official, TikToker and radio host Azziad Nasenya, comedian Daniel ‘Churchill’ Ndambuki and actress Catherine Kamau have all landed cushy jobs in the Kenya Kwanza government. Youth Affairs, Sports and Arts Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba announced the formation of the Creatives Technical Committee via a gazette notice dated February 10, 2023.
But not everyone is happy about Azziad’s appointment. Some netizens feel that her skills on TikTok don’t necessarily translate to government work. Twitter has been buzzing with reactions, led by Kileleshwa Mca and Robert Alai, who had this to say: “I personally don’t know where this country is headed. Azziad’s job was making videos on TikTok and now she’s been given a job by the government, while there are highly qualified doctors who are unemployed.”
I love and respect Azziad.
However, I don’t know her competence.
Beyond TikTok dancing, I don’t understand what serious thing she knows about creative economy or even identifying talent.
We have enough Kenyans who know much more about this.
I can share some names.

Another Kenyan weighed in, “I never saw Azziad, Akothee, Churchill campaigning for Kenya Kwanza during election season. It’s funny how they’re now being given jobs, while local artists in the village who wrote great songs for campaigns are being overlooked. And what’s even funnier is that Raila is silent about it.”
Very true. Those who worked hard for Kenya Kwanza were forgotten long time ago. Ya Mungu ni mengi.

Joining Churchill in the prestigious committee are TikToker and radio host Azziad Nasenya, actress Catherine Kamau, Akinyi Odongo, Jimmi Gathu, Esther ‘Akothee’ Akoth, Kizito Makhande, Rosemary Wahu Kagwi, Awadhi Salim Awadhi, Douglas Kipkirui, and Langat Susan Ekasiba.
According to Youth Affairs, Sports and Arts Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba, the committee will be responsible for proposing systems to collect and distribute royalties to creatives, managing the National Creatives Awards, developing a framework to promote Kenya as a top film-making destination, and more.
While some may question the appointment of TikToker Azziad Nasenya, it seems the committee will not be lacking in star power. With Churchill at the helm and a group of talented individuals by his side, the future looks bright for Kenya’s creative industry.
The gazette notice read, “The Council and its Technical Committees shall undertake any other task as may from time to time be assigned by the Cabinet Secretary aimed at the renaissance of Kenyan sports and the Creative Economy.” Let the renaissance begin.
