The Agriculture cabinet Secretary Peter Munya has advised Kenyans to ignore fake news reporting that the ksh. 100 maize flour subsidy programme had been withdrawn by the government. Addressing Kenyans through Twitter, Peter Munya stated that the maize subsidy plan was still on as earlier reported by the ministry.

The official Ministry of Agriculture Twitter page announced, “We urge Kenyans not to take in fake news from social media platforms or news outlets. The maize subsidy programme is still in support by the Government.”

On Sartuday, a memo circulating argued that the Ministry of Agriculture had put an end to the Maize flour subsidy programme. This raised concerns from Kenyans, who stated that the Government’s decision was inappropriate following the high cost of living. The Ministry has since described the memo as fake, adding that the government will continue to subsidise the product so as to make it available for Kenyans at a favourable price.

This comes at a time when Kenyans are anticipating for new leadership following the August 9th election. Kenyans have raised concerns following the delay in tallying and verification of votes at the Bomas of Kenya tallying center.
