In a letter to institutions, education cabinet Secretary George Magoha stated that schools should be closed in a bid to allow elections to take place as some schools should to be used as polling centers. The CS ordered schools to be close on Tuesday 2nd and be opened on Wednesday 10th August.

,’Following consultation, I hereby convey the Government’s decision on the immediate closure of all basic education institutions from Tuesday, August 2 until Wednesday, August 10 to ensure that preparations and conduct of upcoming elections is carried out seamlessly,’ stated Magoha.

Parents expressed dissapointment over the internet claiming they had already made travelling plans ahead of the August polls. Parents have claimed they pay fees yet students spend most of the time at home. This mostly has been stated by parents with children in boarding schools.

Parents have explained that the disruption is too much and that institutions are benefiting from the short term students spend at school while spending more time at home.

Addressing the Nation, the Parents Association of Kenya has stated that they learnt about the news from social media and this is wrong according to them. Public Service Operators have hiked prices also thus a challenge to everyone .

Magoha in a bid to explain the early closure of schools stated that it is a move to help the Interim Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission ( IEBC) prepare well for the elections. The commission has insisted on using an electronic voter register.

Joe Mucheru also stated that internet will not be shut down during the election period and that Kenyans will have access to social media sites . The other day there were claims of shutting down Facebook.

Magoha apologized on behalf of the government.
