EACC Freezes 27M Of Assets Belonging To A Police Officer Who Earned 20k Monthly

EACC has seized assets accumulating to 27m belonging to a former senior police officer. The officer who was identified as Gabriel Mbiti Mulei is suspected to have acquired the assets illegally. The assets that were freezed include 8.1m cash, 6 parcels of land and four vehicles that were valued at 19.4m within a short period of three years. EACC stated that between 2008 and 2011, Mulei was earning a salary of ksh.20,000.

In a statement, the court explained, “The Plaintiff received credible information that the Defendant herein had engaged in corruption and that he had acquired properties and wealth which was not commensurate to his known source of income. The Plaintiff commenced investigations into the allegations of corruption and possession of the unexplained wealth by the Defendant.”

The court ruled in EACC’s favour, arguing that Mulei’s wealth source was untraceable. Mulei is expected to pay 10m to the government as part of the wealth he is said to have illegally accumulated. “EACC is proceeding to execute this Judgement. In addition, the defendant to pay the sum of Kshs. 10,536,199 to the Government of Kenya being the cumulative bank deposits made by him between 18th June ,2008 and 18th February 2011.”

It is said that Mulei only offered evidence of assets accumulating to 2.38m, leaving the remainder amount unexplained. The court ordered the assets be rewarded to the government of Kenya.
