EACC, Police denies involvement of the ‘raid’ at Matiang’i’s residence

by Chief Okuzo

In a shocking turn of events, a large number of police officers descended upon the Karen residence of former Interior Minister, Dr. Fred Matiang’i, on Wednesday night. Eyewitnesses reported that the officers arrived at the home just before 10pm and were attempting to force their way in.

The sudden arrival of the officers sparked immediate concern and speculation, with initial reports suggesting that the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) was involved in the raid. However, EACC Chief Executive Twalib Mbarak quickly debunked the claims, stating that his team had nothing to do with the reported siege.

Adding to the confusion, Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition leader Raila Odinga arrived at Dr. Matiang’i’s home just after 10pm, seeking to ascertain the reason for the police presence. Dr. Matiang’i’s legal team, who were also present at the residence, called the move unprocedural and claimed that the former minister’s life may be in danger.

“The police have not declared what they want or what he’s done wrong. We do not understand why the police would come to arrest our client in the dead of the night. Why didn’t they come during the day?” questioned lawyer Sam Nyaberi.

In response to the rapidly developing situation, Police Chief Japhet Koome issued a statement, clarifying that no police officer under the National Police Service was sent to Dr. Matiang’i’s home. The statement provided a brief moment of clarity in an otherwise chaotic and unsettling night.
