A Rwandese woman identified as Liliane Mugabekazi was arrested on August 7, 2022 and arraigned for ‘public indecency.’ According to the prosecutors leading her case, the 24-year-old attended a concert while dressed in ‘shameful’ clothing.
If found guilty, Liliane Mugabekazi is at risk of facing a jail term of upto two years. It was reported that earlier this month, Liliane attended singer Tayc’s concert while dressed in a sheer dress.
The lead prosecutor of her case stated that she (Liliane Mugabekazi) wore a dressed that revealed her private parts, which is punishable according to the Rwandese law. The prosecution spokesperson advised the court to remand the suspect for 30 days.
Faustin Nkusi, the prosecution spokesperson stated that in due course, the court would decide whether the suspect would be released on bail or not. The news of her arrested sparked mixed reactions among citizens despite the government backing her arrest.
The former Justice minister Johnstone Busingye backed the move, arguing that the increased incidents of young people drinking and drugging themselves and still lay unconscious while naked was objectionable.
Busingye addressed the issue on his Twitter page, arguing that he fully supported the efforts by the government to put an end to it. The Rwanda Police spokesperson identified as Bosco Kabera stated that there was a build up of immorality and indecency among young men and women that needed to be tamed.
When asked whether people didn’t have the right to dress as they pleased, Bosco argued that the point lay in ‘dressing well’ not indecently. In many occasions, the strict laws subjected to Rwandans by the government have raised reactions from humanitarian across East Africa.
Earlier this year, a 20-year-old woman was arrested after a video of her lying on the ground while drunk resurfaced on social media.
