Polycarp Igathe, the Azimio candidate for Nairobi Governor denied being sponsored by the state on Monday’s gubernatorial debate. The former Nairobi deputy governor stated that he made his entry to politics in 2017 as Sonko’s deputy, adding that it was his own decision to serve the people.
Igathe stated, “I made a decision to get into politics in March 2017. Igathe is his own man, ni uamuzi wangu binafs kuingia politics. Kuna watu wanasema nimeingia siasa Juzi, nilichaguliwa na kura 869,000,” na sasa nimerudi tena kusimama, ni uamuzi wangu kusimama.”
The latter stated that his campaigns as well are funded by friends and cash of his own, adding that he is not a state project. However, his top opponent Sakaja stated that some senior people in government have continously championed for Igathe to take over the Nairobi gubernatorial position.

Polycarp was announced the Azimio governor candidate in April this year, and this prompted critics to argue that the former Equity employee was imposed by the state. Polycarp Igathe argued that he has true intentions to the residents of Nairobi and that he will bring his experience in the private sector to serve the citizens and make the city better.
Igathe explained that he was approached by the business community who encouraged him to go for the top seat in Nairobi. Igathe has been using a different campaign tactic of going to the ground and interacting with residents. However, different opinion polls in the past have ranked Johnson Sakaja far much ahead of Igathe. What are your thoughts on this story? Kindly share your insights with us down below.
