Kenya has firmly rejected allegations from Sudan’s military-led administration that it is exacerbating the ongoing conflict in Sudan. The Kenyan Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs issued a statement on Tuesday, labeling the accusations as a “baseless tirade” and reaffirming Kenya’s commitment to regional peace efforts.
The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) had circulated a diplomatic note accusing Kenya of supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group engaged in a protracted conflict with the SAF. Sudan’s claims were primarily based on Kenya hosting a meeting in Nairobi where RSF leaders and allied groups signed a charter proposing the formation of a “Government of Peace and Unity” in RSF-controlled territories.
In response, Kenya clarified that providing a venue for dialogue does not equate to endorsing any faction or the establishment of a parallel government. The Ministry emphasized that Kenya’s actions are in line with its longstanding role as a neutral mediator in regional conflicts, operating within frameworks like the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi addressed the issue, stating, “Kenya is a center for mediation. We only encourage peaceful conversations for peaceful resolutions. That is the extent to which Kenya has been engaged with the various parties in Sudan.” He further denied any Kenyan involvement in supporting the RSF, dismissing such claims as politically motivated.
The diplomatic rift has led Sudan to recall its ambassador from Nairobi and impose a ban on Kenyan imports, citing Kenya’s alleged interference in its internal affairs. The Sudanese government described Kenya’s hosting of the RSF meeting as a violation of Sudan’s sovereignty and international law.
International reactions have been mixed. While Kenya maintains its stance as a neutral facilitator, countries like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar have expressed concerns over the formation of a parallel government in Sudan, emphasizing the importance of the country’s unity and territorial integrity.
Kenya continues to advocate for a peaceful resolution to the Sudanese conflict, urging all parties involved to engage in constructive dialogue. The Kenyan government has reiterated its support for a unified Sudan and its commitment to facilitating discussions aimed at achieving lasting peace in the region.
