How far is too far when you venture down the treacherous lanes of politics? Mombasa-based blogger Bruce Chawa has discovered firsthand just how brutal the political battlefield can be. Right now, Bruce is in the hospital, nursing serious injuries—both physical and psychological—after a political showdown that escalated far beyond his control.
It all began when the outspoken blogger took to TikTok, unleashing a verbal assault against the current Mombasa governor. What started as a rant about incompetence quickly turned personal. Bruce didn’t just criticize the governor’s governance; he aimed at his family, hurling insults at his wife and mother. To cap it off, Bruce dared the governor to come for him, boldly throwing down a gauntlet he wasn’t prepared to pick up.
“mama nasimu mk*ndu wako, metuzalia mtoto mwana haramu hii Mombasa, mke wa abdullswamad naye ni mal*ya” bruce ranted in a a viral video
At that moment, Bruce may have forgotten an old Swahili proverb: *”Usishindane na ndovu kunia, utapasuka msamba”*—don’t challenge an elephant to a defecation contest unless you’re prepared to split your own back. The governor, a political heavyweight, clearly wasn’t amused. And as Bruce would soon learn, his taunt didn’t fall on deaf ears.
Not long after the video went live, a group of 20 unidentified men stormed Bruce’s house, requesting a “conversation.” Outnumbered and with no real options, Bruce obliged. He was escorted to a waiting car, but what he didn’t realize was that this ride would be his entry into a nightmare.
Inside the vehicle, Bruce found himself surrounded by men armed to the teeth, ready to teach him a lesson he’d never forget. The beating began, but that was just the start. His captors blindfolded him, bound his hands, and whisked him away to an unknown location. But the real horror came when they stopped and handed him over to another group of men, even more ruthless than the first. What followed was an unspeakable assault, not only physically brutal but humiliating in ways that defy human decency. According to Bruce, three of the men violated him while others stood by, filming the entire ordeal.
Today, Bruce lies in a hospital bed, his body bruised and broken, accusing the governor of orchestrating this cruel attack. The governor, however, has neither confirmed nor denied the allegations, leaving a cloud of uncertainty hanging over the situation. Meanwhile, the human rights community in Mombasa is demanding that the government step in and bring those responsible to justice.
