Actress Winnie Bwire Ndubi, fondly known as ‘Dida’ from the popular Citizen TV series Sultana, has sadly passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Her family confirmed the news in a press statement, revealing that she was undergoing treatment in Turkey at the time of her passing. Just a week ago, on August 28th, she shared with her fans that she had arrived safely in Turkey to continue her treatment.
“It is with heavy hearts and humble acceptance of God’s will that we announce Winfred Bwire Ndubi lost her battle to cancer on 5th September 2024 while undergoing treatment in Turkey. We thank you all for your overwhelming support, prayers, and generous giving during her treatment. We will share more details in due course.
God bless you all” reads part of the statement
Despite her upbeat presence on social media, Winnie had been fighting breast cancer for years, regularly updating her followers about her journey on Instagram. She first noticed something was wrong when she experienced recurring pain in her armpit, usually coinciding with her menstrual cycle. Her initial consultation with a doctor didn’t reveal any signs of cancer, but as the pain persisted, she sought the opinion of a gynecologist. After a biopsy, the devastating diagnosis came: breast cancer.

Winnie confessed that her initial reaction to the diagnosis was fear, not only of the disease but of losing her beloved role as ‘Dida’ in Sultana, owing to the common misconceptions about chemotherapy’s toll. As her condition progressed, further tests revealed that the cancer had spread to her brain, bones, and breast. Faced with these findings, she immediately began radiotherapy for her brain, pausing treatment for her breast, as the brain metastasis was affecting her balance and coordination.
She recalled the harrowing symptoms—persistent headaches, vomiting, and memory loss—symptoms of cancer spreading to the brain. The radiotherapy treatments left her exhausted, triggering hormonal imbalances, but throughout it all, Winnie found strength in the support of her family and fans.
