Mammito, Nasra, and Eric Omondi Risk It All in War Against President Ruto

by Chief Okuzo

Several prominent Kenyan celebrities have come together to voice their concerns over the economic difficulties facing the nation and to exert pressure on the government to address the high cost of living. While some celebrities have traditionally avoided criticizing the government to safeguard their access to government contracts and financial opportunities, a few have taken a bold stance against the President and his administration due to unfulfilled promises and the soaring cost of living.

1. Comedian Mammito Takes a Stand: The renowned comedian Mammito recently stepped up to address the issue of excessive taxation imposed on the Kenyan population by the government. In a creative twist, she borrowed from Bahati Bukuku’s song “Waraka wa Hamani” and created her own version, titled “Waraka wa Corruption.” In her rendition, Mammito passionately expressed how Kenyan citizens unwittingly elected a government that would burden them with exorbitant taxes under the leadership of Ruto. While she refrained from mentioning the President by name, she cleverly referred to him as “Zakayo,” drawing a parallel to the biblical tax collector who exploited the people through unjust taxation, a name that Kenyans have now assigned to Ruto due to his perceived over-taxation policies.

Mammito also raised concerns about the government’s excessive borrowing from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), followed by the alleged misappropriation of funds by government officials, leaving Kenyan citizens struggling to repay these loans.

2. Nasra Yusuff Joins the Chorus: Comedian Nasra Yusuff also lent her voice to the outcry against Ruto and his administration. In a musical rendition posted on her Instagram account, Nasra used Diamond Platnumz’s hit song “Zuena” to express her frustration with the challenging economic crisis in the country. She humorously referred to the President as “Zakayo,” but underlying her humor was a grave concern for the high cost of living, where ordinary citizens struggle to secure even a single meal while the nation reportedly loses a staggering 2 billion Kenyan shillings daily.

Nasra echoed the sentiments of many Kenyans who have regretted voting Ruto into office, and she questioned the apparent transformation of Ruto since taking office, suggesting that he has become tougher and less connected with the people compared to his campaign days when he appeared approachable and relatable.

3. Eric Omondi Takes Center Stage: Dubbed the “Kenyan King of Comedy,” Eric Omondi has not been shy about expressing his dissatisfaction with the current government. Since Ruto assumed the presidency, Omondi has been actively involved in staging protests across Kenya. He has also made public statements about his intention to mobilize youth for a potential impeachment process against Ruto, leveraging the Constitution as a tool for change.

While these comedians have united in their critique of Ruto’s government, some Kenyan citizens caution them against crossing certain boundaries when criticizing the President. They warn that their actions, though well-intentioned, may have unintended consequences and potentially invite trouble into their own lives.

The collective voice of these influential Kenyan celebrities highlights the pressing concerns of ordinary citizens and the need for the government to address the economic challenges faced by the nation. Their bold stance has drawn attention to the issue of high living costs and the impact it has on the daily lives of Kenyan citizens.
