Controversy Erupts Over AFCON Venue :Governors Challenge stadium Selection

by Chief Okuzo

In a joint statement issued today, Kisumu Governor Prof. Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o and Kakamega Governor H.E. FCPA Ferdinand Baraza have raised concerns regarding the choice of venue for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 football matches in Kenya.

The statement comes in response to the UDA government’s decision to host the AFCON 2027 matches exclusively in Nairobi and Eldoret, a choice that the governors find troubling. They argue that Western Kenya, specifically Kisumu or Kakamega, should have been considered as host cities, given the region’s abundant football enthusiasts.

Governor Nyong’o and Governor Baraza emphasize that the success of the matches largely depends on the attendance at the stadiums, and they assert that Eldoret, known primarily for athletics, may not provide the ideal football fan base. They suggest that hosting matches in Eldoret might lead to empty stadiums and limited impact.

The governors also question whether the decision is influenced by Kenya Kwanza Company Limited’s ownership structure, potentially leaving Western Kenya out of the hosting opportunities. They express disappointment that the initial collaborative spirit exhibited in the East African Community seems to have shifted upon returning to Kenya.

Comparing Kenya’s hosting approach to that of neighboring countries involved in the PAMOJA proposal, the governors point out that Uganda and Tanzania have each selected three venues to host matches. They question why a similar strategy cannot be applied in Kenya to ensure broader representation.

In conclusion, the governors urge a reconsideration of the venue selection, stressing that the people of Western Kenya are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to host AFCON 2027 matches.
