Chuma chako kimotoni: Pastor Nganga delivers tough warning to president ruto

by Chief Okuzo

In a growing chorus of discontentment, Kenyan clergymen are raising their voices against President Ruto’s government, citing the crushing burden of high living costs on the populace. Among the prominent religious figures openly criticizing the administration is Apostle James Maina Nganga of the Neno Evangelism Center.

In a widely circulated video, Apostle Nganga can be seen passionately addressing President Ruto, condemning the heavy taxation that has burdened ordinary Kenyan citizens. He did not mince words, declaring, “Sometimes you are misleading this nation, uchumi ni mbaya na mnatumia hizo pesa vile mnataka” (the economy is in shambles, and you’re using the funds as you please).

During his fervent sermon, Apostle Nganga also issued a bold challenge to President Ruto and his government, possibly drawing inspiration from recent events involving fellow pastor Ezekiel. The latter faced potential church closure, with speculation rife that his vocal criticism of Ruto’s government had made him a target.

In a daring tone, Apostle Nganga exclaimed, “Mnaongezea bei ya kila kitu juu, huku na kule, na mtu akiwaambia mnafunga kanisa, si mkuje mufunge yangu basi stupid mlinikuta nikihubiri, I will continue speaking what is right I swear before God” (You raise the prices of everything, and when someone says you’re closing churches, why not come and shut mine down too? You found me preaching; I will continue speaking the truth, I swear before God).

Apostle Nganga didn’t stop there; he issued a stern warning, reminding President Ruto that his leadership was under divine scrutiny. He cautioned, “Some of you guys, you are misleading this nation na chuma chenu kimotoni, naongea kama mtume huyo Mungu mnacheza nae atawatoa kwa jiko, it is too much mnajiongezea pesa huku alafu mnaongezea wananchi maisha magumu” (You’re playing with fire by misleading the nation and amassing wealth while the people’s lives become more difficult. I speak as a prophet, God is watching, and He will intervene; you’re overdoing it).

Although Apostle Nganga didn’t explicitly mention any government official by name, many speculated that he was directing his remarks toward President Ruto, whose administration has faced criticism for imposing heavy taxes on essential goods. These comments echoed sentiments expressed by The Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya, Jackson Ole Sapit.

Archbishop Sapit cautioned President Ruto, suggesting that failing to fulfill critical promises could erode public trust. He urged Ruto to confront the reality of the situation, stating, “I know you made heavy promises during campaigns, and we knew that most of them were unrealistic. Those promises portrayed Kenya as a little paradise even immediately after the elections. It is the moment to face the truth! Just come out and tell Kenyans that the promises we made were unrealistic, and now let’s go to prioritization.”

Sapit emphasized that President Ruto must prioritize the nation’s pressing needs and avoid undue pressure to fulfill unattainable commitments. He concluded, “Should you try to push so hard to achieve what you promised yet we all know that we don’t have the resources to deliver, then you are going to break everybody’s back.”

These warnings come at a time when President Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza government faces mounting pressure to honor campaign pledges amid a struggling economy, marked by soaring prices of essential commodities. President Ruto’s election promises included reducing the cost of living within the first 100 days of his term. However, one year into his presidency, many of these promises remain unfulfilled, leaving the nation grappling with the burden of high living costs.
