As tensions rise over the escalating cost of living, the Kenyan police have issued a stern warning ahead of the highly anticipated demonstration scheduled for tomorrow, July 11, 2023. Led by the influential azimio leader, Raila Odinga, the protests aim to exert pressure on President Ruto’s administration to address the growing concerns of the citizens.
In a press statement released by the National Police Service Headquarters, Inspector General Japhet Koome emphasized the importance of maintaining public order and ensuring national security. “While the Constitutional provision under Article 37 guarantees freedom of assembly, picketing, and petitioning, our statistics this year have clearly shown that such demonstrations have not only left behind a trail of massive destruction of property worth millions of Shillings, but also led to the death of innocent members of the public and law enforcement officers,” warned Koome.

In light of these concerns, the National Police Service is urging the public to take note that no notifications of demonstrations have been received, as required by law. “In the absence of notifications by planners of any demonstrations as a legal prerequisite to enable Police to provide adequate security to demonstrators and the public, Police have no other option but to take necessary measures to apprehend all illegal demonstrations,” stated Koome.
The Inspector General further added, “No such demonstrations, gatherings, or protests will be allowed tomorrow since no such notification has been presented to any police station. All lawful means will be used to disperse such demonstrations.” He emphasized, however, that the National Police Service remains committed to upholding the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, respecting the rule of law, and protecting human rights.
