DJ Evolve, whose real name is Felix Orinda, testified in court on Thursday as a defense witness in the misuse of firearm case against Embakasi East Member of Parliament, Babu Owino. DJ Evolve, who was allegedly shot by Owino in a Nairobi club in 2020, told the court that he did not witness the legislator with a firearm on a fateful day.
Speaking virtually from his bed, the DJ admitted that he doesn’t have a clear recollection of what transpired that night. He recalled only finding himself in an ambulance, unaware of the circumstances that led to his injury. However, he confirmed to the Nairobi court that he was indeed shot and wounded by a bullet, although he couldn’t identify the source of the firearm.

Surprisingly, DJ Evolve stated that Babu Owino is his friend and has been providing support, including paying his hospital bills. When questioned by Defence lawyer Duncan Okatch about whether he saw Owino with a gun, DJ Evolve responded, “No, we were just having conversations.”
He further revealed, “I was injured by a bullet, but I don’t know from which gun…I just found myself in a vehicle to the hospital…I later discovered that Babu Owino was supporting me, and as a friend, I expected my friends to look after me.”

Highlighting the extent of support he received, DJ Evolve mentioned that he received medical care and that his utilities and general well-being were taken care of. He emphasized that his testimony was given voluntarily.
Edwin Otieno, Babu Owino’s private protection officer and personal assistant, also took the stand and shared his testimony. He informed the court that prior to the incident, Owino’s firearm had experienced an issue, and the MP had mentioned that it had jammed at the shooting range.
Last week, Babu Owino disclosed that he had already spent Ksh.58.6 million in covering DJ Evolve’s expenses. This includes a Ksh.17 million apartment in Kilimani, medical services amounting to Ksh.23 million, a monthly upkeep of Ksh.70,000, and other related costs.
