Paul McKenzie, a name now synonymous with controversy and tragedy, has been dominating the news cycle as the mastermind behind a horrifying sequence of events that led to the death of his followers. But who is this enigmatic figure, and what is the story behind his rise to notoriety?
Rewinding time, a former friend paints a very different picture of Pastor McKenzie, describing him as a humble taxi driver who closed his business to dedicate his life to the church in 2003. At its inception, McKenzie’s Good News International Church was a beacon of hope, converting many to Christianity and guiding them toward a spiritual path. “He made me give my life to Christ and join his church,” the former friend confessed.
As years went by, however, Pastor McKenzie’s actions began to raise eyebrows. Accused of indoctrinating children against attending school, labeling educational institutions as ungodly, the pastor found himself at odds with the government. In 2018, McKenzie clashed with former Malindi no Aisha Jumwa over his controversial teachings, only to be released on a 500k bond with surety after denying the allegations.

The next chapter in McKenzie’s life took a darker turn when he claimed to have received a divine command to shut down his church after 16 years of service. Heeding the mysterious call, McKenzie relocated to an 800-acre piece of land in the Shakahola forest, where his church’s descent into infamy began.
Despite allegations of luring followers into dangerous fasting practices, which reportedly led to the death of two minors, McKenzie maintained his innocence in a recent interview. Released on a Sh10,000 cash bail by a Malindi court, the pastor’s troubles were far from over.

The Shakahola Massacre, a gruesome event marked by the death of men and women who had fasted in hopes of meeting their maker, catapulted Pastor McKenzie back into the limelight. Seventy-three bodies were exhumed from shallow graves on Monday, with the count expected to rise as investigators continue their grim task. Some graves housed as many as six bodies, a chilling testament to the tragedy that unfolded under McKenzie’s guidance.
The once-revered pastor now sits in police custody, his image tarnished by the harrowing consequences of his teachings.
