The Kenyan digital space is currently experiencing a heatwave as Chebet Rono, a popular content creator takes on her counterparts Elsa Majimbo and Kate Actress over alleged content plagiarism. In a fiery Twitter rant, Rono accused the two of being “copycats” and mimicking her every move.
“If Elsa says something I haven’t said, why are we pretending Elsa is funny? And Kate Actress stalks my page like she ain’t married. What I am saying is NO RONOH, no little pigs, I began this sh*t!” Rono exclaimed on Twitter.
Not content with just a social media rant, Rono took to video to throw more shade at her alleged copycats, saying “I’m calling everyone out. Kate Actress, stop copying me. Elsa Majimbo, stop copying. Are you all out of material?”
As expected, netizens flocked to the trio’s accounts to check for any signs of similar content. Kate Actress, however, calmly responded to Rono’s accusations with a shower of compliments, saying “Rono, we love aunty debs. We want to be aunty debs, the rich aunty. You are such an incredible, consistent content creator. I celebrate you Rono. Keep shining.”
But Rono was having none of it, insisting that Kate Actress had copied her character, Aunty Debs. Kate, however, refuted the claims, stating that she had merely taken inspiration from Rono and changed the character’s name to the Rich Aunty.
“Wacha kunizoea, Aunty Debz started this. Najua unaniogopa,” Rono retorted to Kate Actress.
Elsa Majimbo, on the other hand, defended herself by claiming that she had started her content before Rono, but Rono had gained massive influence before her. “I blew after her, and people get that so confused. They think like the fact that I am in this space means that there is no space for her or the fact that she is in the same space means that there is no space for me,” Majimbo explained.
But she wasn’t content with just defending herself. Majimbo also took the opportunity to throw a few punches, asserting that no one could ever block God’s blessings and that she and her 7,000 followers had reached 200,000 – an achievement that no one could take away from her.
It seems that the Kenyan digital space is in for a bumpy ride as these three content creators continue to jostle for supremacy. Will they bury the hatchet and create groundbreaking content together, or will the competition get even fiercer? Stay tuned to find out.
