Police vow to bring justice for Kiernan Forbes (AKA) and second victim

Tragically, South African rapper AKA, born Kiernan Forbes, was shot and killed on Friday in Durban. The incident occurred outside a popular nightspot on Florida Road, just after 10:15 p.m. local time. AKA was scheduled to perform in Durban that evening and had earlier posted about his upcoming album release on Instagram.

Confirming the news, a local police spokesperson stated that two men were killed in the shooting and that the identity of one of the victims, a well-known rapper, is believed to be AKA. Paramedics declared AKA deceased at the scene, while the second victim also died despite life-saving efforts.

“ What we can confirm for, now, is that a well-known, musician, a 35-year-old, and his bodyguard, were killed. Onita Road on Friday night. What we have for now is that the musician and his security detail were having supper at the restaurant, so they were leaving the restaurant when two unknown gunmen came across the street on foot and opened fire on them killing them instantly.

Fans and fellow artists quickly took to social media to express their shock and heartbreak, posting condolences and pleading for the rapper to confirm his safety. AKA had attracted over 489,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and was known for hits such as “Lemons (Lemonade),” “Fela in Versace,” and “All Eyes on Me.” His most recent album release was “Prada” earlier this year.

The South African police have launched a full investigation into the shooting, with the hope of finding the culprits and bringing them to justice. This marks a devastating loss for the music industry, and for the countless fans who have been touched by AKA’s talent and music. The artist, also known as Supa Mega, leaves behind a daughter with ex, DJ Zinhle, and lost his fiancée, Anele “Nelli” Tembe, earlier this year.
