In a move that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has ordered the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to submit documents pertaining to the controversial August 2022 election. In a letter dated January 25, DCI boss Mohamed Amin wrote to Chief Executive Officer Hussein Marjan, demanding that the agency be furnished with certified copies of the election results from all 290 constituencies.
This move comes after Azimio party leader Raila Odinga’s persistent claims that the election was marred with malpractice. In the letter, Amin stated that the DCI would be particularly looking into accusations that IEBC allegedly used a doctored copy of aggregated Form 34Bs to call the election in favor of President William Ruto.
The team that provided oversight of the general election will also be scrutinized for forgery claims. According to Director Amin, “The Directorate is investigating the validity and authenticity of the documents in question”. The investigation will also examine whether any offenses related to forgery and falsification of documents have been committed, in accordance with Sections 345 – 348 of the Penal Code. ” in addition to whether offenses relating to forgery and falsification of documents have been committed under Sections 345 – 348 of the Penal Code,” Amin ordered. All documents should be submitted to the DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road.
As of publication, our reporters were unable to verify whether Marjan responded to the letter. In a press conference on January 23, Jubilee party Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni announced the allegations of an election whistleblower who claimed that Raila Odinga had won the election.
Kioni stated that the whistleblower had evidence of vote rigging in favor of Odinga in the Mount Kenya region and rejected the official results released by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) which showed Odinga only receiving 800,000 votes. In the Kamukunji declaration, the former Premier stated that he did not recognize Ruto as the president and called for an inquiry into IEBCs systems.
As the political drama continues to unfold, one thing is for certain: the DCI’s investigation into the 2022 election is sure to shake things up in the coming months.
