Revered Kenyan actress Lupita Nyong’o was heavily censured after she was revealed by the De Beer Group as their very first global ambassador.
Many of the critics expressed their opinions bashing the actress for conjuring a deal with a company that gains over exploiting African soil for their rich mineral sources. The De Beers Group is a luxury diamond jewellery company based in the UK that specialises in diamond mining, retail, exploitation and trading founded way back in 1888.
The company has four nations as it’s sources spread across two continents with Namibia, Botswana and South Africa as the African countries they mine from.
Although Lupita is positively sure that through the platform she will be able to reach out there and emancipate as many women as possible. “Even more importantly, my partnership with De Beers allows me to extend my advocacy for women and girls around the world,” she stated.
Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi was among those who expressed their dismay in the actress.
This ambassadorship has disturbed me deeply. His dad is a revolutionary, a hero of the second liberation and then the daughter goes to bed with De Beers? I’m lost for words. https://t.co/CSZkpENvUb
