Langata Constituency member of parliament Felix Odiwuor alias Jalango had sent the internet into a frenzy after claiming through his Twitter account that over 30 million Kenyans had applied for the green card lottery.
“Thirty million Kenyans have applied for the Green Card lottery. So only 20 million of us want to live in Kenya. Is it that bad?” he said.
However, it has been revealed that the comedian’s allegations were untrue after official data from the US department of state on the diversity visa program contradicted Jalango’s remarks.
The department of state revealed that less than 200,000 Kenyan citizens applied for the green card lottery program adding that the number of Kenyans who applied for the green card lottery had dropped over the past few years where 443,773 Kenyans applied for the lottery program in 2019 while 570,081 Kenyans applied in 2020 and 173,218 Kenyans applied in 2021.
According to the statistics, 4,877,931 Africans applied for a Green Card in 2021, a huge drop from the 10,877,791 and 11,315,826 applications submitted in 2019 and 2020 respectively.
