Self declared president of comedy in Africa Eric Omondi has been hitting headlines in the recent past for criticizing musicians and artistes of the Kenyan music industry. Eric, who rose to fame during the prime days of Nation’s comedy show dubbed ‘ Churchill show’ has insisted on the Kenyan media playing 75% of Kenyan music arguing out that international media plays a lot of their own music.

The comedian turned critic has already tabled a bill in parliament in a bid to ensure that the Kenyan Media will play 75% of the local music. Several artistes have responded to Eric who has been vocal claiming that Kenyan music is substandard further adding that it is the reason international artistes jet into the country and perform well earning a hefty amount of money unlike their Kenyan counterparts.

In a recent interview with Vincent Mboya, famous genge star Mejja was quick to hilariously respond to Eric’s comments concerning musicians. Mejja stated that it is unlikely that a comedian advises a musician further drawing a parallel between an egg seller advising a driver on how to operate a vehicle. Mejja maintained that Eric’s profession is different from that of any musician and as such the former has no right to criticize any musician.

Should the bill the comedian tabled in parliament pass, then the Kenyan Media should play Kenyan music more. While this may be a good move, the quality of music being produced by local musicians is in question. From content being sung to the quality of videos being shot by our artistes , netizens have a choice of deciding what type of music they want to listen to.

Neighbouring countries like Tanzania and others from the west like Nigeria have witnessed their music being recognized globally thus the push by some Kenyans to ensure local music sells.
