BTS Group To Go ‘MIA’ For Almost 2 Years.

K-pop boy band superstars BTS made headlines after their management company announced that the band will serve their mandatory military duties under the South Korean legal code.

Big Hit Music said that Jin, the eldest member of the group, will complete the necessary actions and rescind his request to delay his conscription at the end of the month. The six additional BTS members also intend to enlist in the military, and according to a statement from the company, they “look forward to reconvening as a group again around 2025 following their service commitment.”

It is required by law in South Korea for every male individual to enroll for compulsory 18-21 months of military service prior to turning 35 years of age, however their female counterparts can voluntarily partake in the service.

Military Manpower Administration officials highlighted that the singers would go through the same process as regular South Korean males and that after enrolling, Jin and other BTS members would undergo five weeks of military training before being assigned to specific units and tasks.

The South Korean draft causes young men to stop working or studying, therefore evading military service or obtaining exemptions is a very touchy subject. Recent polls of public opinion revealed that opinions on whether BTS members should join the military were divided.

Other famous individuals to undertake the mandatory military service is Tottenham Hotspur’s player Heung-min Son.
