Flossing your teeth can be very important in helping you fight severe cognitive decline. Did you know that good oral habits protect you from dementia and cases of Cognitive impairment? This is according to a research done by the NYU Rory Meyers College in the department of Nursing.

Professor Bei Wuin global who is a well known health professor at NYU Rory Meyers College department of Nursing and who has been the senior study author made the following remarks,

“Given the staggering number of people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia each year, and the opportunity to improve oral health across the life span, it’s important to gain a deeper understanding of the connection between poor oral health and cognitive decline.”

The researchers conducted fourteen case study trials. A total of thirty seven thousand and seventy four people took place in the study. It was found that among all those people, a total of four thousand, six hundred and eighty nine people were found to have declined in their cognitive function.

The study showed that adults who had large cases of tooth loss were found to have higher cases of getting dementia and cognitive impairment as well.

When you loose a single tooth, the risk of a person getting dementia disease tends to grow. The research further showed that patients who lost their teeth and did not get them replaced suffered chances of acquiring cognitive impairment.

Bei Wuin further said, “We need to think about increasing awareness of the importance of oral health, and we also need to think about preventive treatment and dentures.” Why are dentures important in case you loose a tooth? Well, they are important because they do not limit you from eating hard foods.
