Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has promised to throw a ten-day celebrating for Ferdinand Omanyala, who won the 100m final race in the ongoing Commonwealth games in Birmingham.
The Kenyan sprinter managed to clock 10.02 seconds in windy conditions to become the first Kenyan to win gold in the competition. It shall be recalled that Omanyala broke the record to become the first Kenyan to win Gold in the springs since 1960.
His achievement caught the attention of Mike Sonko promised to gift Omanyala one limousine for the huge achievement. He stated, “Mulipokuwa mumelala munaota Mkenya mmoja ambae ni fastest man Africa nzima Ferdinand Omanyala ameshindia nchi ya Kenya gold at the Commonwealth Games, clocking 10.02 seconds.”
“Pongezi sana na serikali ikikubali nitakupangia sherehe kubwa ya kukulaki na limousines 15 zikupokee na nikufanyie sherehe ya 10 days na nikupee limo moja bure iwe yako. Twakupenda sana for making us proud.”
The defending champion Akani Simbine of South Africa won the silver in 10.13 seconds while Yukun Abeykoon of Sri Lanka came third in 10.14 seconds. Kenyans have since celebrated Omanyala’s achievement on social media.
This comes days after Omanyala suffered a blow in the recent Oregon competitions following Visa issues. However, Omanyala argued that no one was to blame for the Visa delay.
However, Kenyans shared their reactions, adding that the government was to blame, arguing that Omanyala’s woes could have been solved if at all the officials took their responsibilities seriously.
