William Ruto has ruled out the possibility of engaging in a political handshake with his rival Raila Odinga. The president-elect stated that he will work with the Azimio leaders in their official opposition role to deliver services to Kenyans.
He argued that the role of opposition will be important to oversight his government. Ruto added that his competitors will have a role to play with the work accorded to them by the constitution.
He stated, “my competitors have a role to play. I will work with my competitors in the role that the constitution assigns the people in the opposition. They will provide oversight over my government and I intend to work with them in that capacity.”
Mr Ruto was speaking on Monday with the joint media after being declared the president elect by the IEBC chairman Mr Wafula Chebukati. In his address before declaring William Ruto as the president elect, Chebukati argued that he faced opposition and harassment prior to releasing the results.
The harassment, he said was faced by him and other IEBC officials, arguing that one returning officer had gone missing and others got injured. However, four IEBC officials stated that they weren’t satisfied with the outcome of the results that were going to be announced by the IEBC chairman.
Azimio leaders have expressed their dissatisfaction, arguing that they will proceed to court to challenge the results within the next 21 days. What are your thoughts on this story?
