Kakamega Governor-elect Mr. Fernandes Barasa has promised to work on reviving the fallen Mumias sugar company on his first days in office. During a previous interview, Mr. Barasa mentioned a few strategies that he is committed to employ to ensure that the exercise is successful.
The ODM candidate argued that political cartels have continued to prevent efforts that have since been made to revive the company, adding that his government is keen on taking the company back on its feet.
He stated, “Mumias sugar has failed because of political cartels. Guys who have been given a free hand to import sugar but more so is the interference with the efforts by the receiver manager who had been contracted to get someone hired to at least put forward a strategy of reviving the factory.”
“I was on record supporting the receiver manager in getting an investor to come and do alot of revival programmes, invest in farm inputs as well as invest in ensuring the factory is functional. But you find politicians going to court to stop the process.”
This comes barely a day after Barasa won the election in Kakamega. He promised to restart a programme that would motivate farmers who were tired of doing sugar farming because they weren’t appreciated enough. Some of those farmers stopped sugsr sugarcane farming because they weren’t being paid enough money.
However, Barasa promised to work closely with those farmers so as to revive the company. He however argued that he fully supported the leasing of the sugar company to Sarrai group.
