Former Alshabaab Leader Appointed As New Religion Minister

by Jayden Musembi

The Somalian administration has appointed the former spokesperson of Alshabaab Islamic group as the religion minister. The announcement was made by the current Prime Minister, Hamza Abdi Barre, who explained the terms of how the appointment was met.

His appointment comes as a relief to Muktar Robow, who spent four years under house arrest following his fallout with the former president, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed alias Farmajo. It shall be recalled that Mr Robow defected his membership from the group in 2017.

His capture award was set at $5M by the United States Government prior to his arrest. Speaking on Tuesday, the Prime Minister of Somalia Hamza Abdi Barre stated, “After consultations that took a period of more than 30 days… I’m very happy to present Somali men and women who I have selected based on their academic background, experience and fairness. I’m expecting they will respond to the needs of the country.”

It shall be recalled that the former Alshabaab spokesman was arrested in 2018, when he was set to run for an elective position.

However, the government arraigned him and argued that he tried to undermine stability, which was punishable by the Somalian law. However, Robow can bow breath a sigh of relief, and this is after the newly elected Somalian president Mr Hassan Sheikh Mohamed argued that his government is very willing to negotiate with the Alshabaab militia to come into a consensus.

However, he added that the negotiation would happen when the right time comes. What are your thoughts on this story? Share your insights down below.
